Land is scarce in urban centers. When it comes to adaptive reuse, the Thai people have taken things to a whole new level with the Folded Umbrella Market. Located at Mae Klhong

Railway in Samut Songkhram province, The Folded Umbrella Market is a narrow network of primarily food stalls lining either side of the track. When there isn't a train rolling through the Market, local vendors hawk their wares - mostly fresh produce, snacks and other foodstuffs. As the train approaches, vendors fold up their umbrellas (or awnings) and clear enough space for the train to pass by. So when someone says, “lookout, there's a train coming” you better keep your head on a swivel.
