Mountain biking may not be the first thing you associate with Hong Kong—one of the most densely populated places on Earth—but it shouldn’t be as far down the list as you think. Since the fast-moving city streets tend to be dangerous for novice bikers, the best way to experience Hong Kong on two non-motorized wheels is to head to the outskirts. The Tai Lam Reservoir Loop has some of the most spectacular mountain views in the area. Haven’t hit the pedals since your elementary school commute? Just stick to the south end of the loop, which is more pleasant country road than oh-god-I’m-going-to-die. If you’re an adrenaline junky, Dragon’s Back has some intense slopes for downhill bombing, and doubles as one of the most scenic hiking trails in the area with views of the sea on both sides of the ridge. These rocky trails have fostered a booming mountain biking scene in Hong Kong, making it the perfect place to live out all those X-Games fantasies. Bring an extra can of Red Bull, just in case.
