When the Broad art museum opened downtown, it needed an equally impressive, equally artistic restaurant on-site to keep patrons well-fed and appropriately liquored up. Otium hits all the right notes. The building itself is a futurist's fantasy, a striking wood and glass cube decked out with woodsy murals on the mile-high walls. The cocktails are some of the most inventive in the city, featuring masala chai MILK PUNCH and a cheeky gin drink infused with peanut and pomegranate that's meant to mimic a PBJ.

Chef Timothy Hollingsworth ditched the stuffy white-tablecloth world when he left Michelin-starred The French Laundry, and his newfound style at Otium is all freewheeling, California produce-based goodness. Peek into the open kitchen and you'll see cooks using tweezers to top off a FOIE GRAS FUNNELCAKES with brightly colored nasturtium leaves, and adding smoking sashimi in a Japanese donabe pot. Stroll across the plaza after dessert to explore the less-edible artwork at the neighboring Broad museum.
